Whataburger Is Testing New Face-To-Pay Technology
Your all-time Whataburger favorite may be the double meat Whataburger with cheese, jalapenos, pickles and tomatoes or it could be the honey bbq chicken strip sandwich with extra cheese or a taquito with bacon and cheese with a lot of picante sauce.
No matter what your favorite is you order the same thing nearly every time at Whataburger and while your favorite hasn't changed the way you pay for it has.
Years ago the only way to pay for that Whataburger favorite was with cash, but thanks to technology payment options have expanded. You can now pay with:
- credit card via a chip reader
- tap to pay with phone
- pay through the Whataburger app
Soon you may be able to pay for that Whataburger using just your face.
Facial recognition payment could be popping up at a Whataburger near you. Whataburger has partnered with JP Morgan Payments and PopID to test a new biometrics payment system using facial recognition software to pay for your meal.
Where is it being tested?
The payment platform is currently being tested with real customers. When MySA inquired about specific locations, Whataburger declined to release that information as testing of the system is still ongoing.
How the facial recognition pay option works:
Once you opt into the program, you'll upload a photo along with your banking information and then when you make a purchase at a Whataburger location a camera will scan your face, and payment is made within a couple of seconds. No more carrying a card to pay or paying with your phone.
The company behind the technology is also deploying this technology for access to office buildings, temperature checks at work, drive-thru payments, kiosk ordering, and ticketless (concert) venue access.
Will this new form of payment become an option at all Texas Whataburger locations? We're not sure at the time of this writing, but it looks like it could be a strong possibility. So while you wait to pay-by-face you can try one of Whataburger's latest menu additions, like WhataWings or iced coffee and a brownie.
As I wait for this new technology to be deployed here in East Texas, I'll tap to pay for my Whataburger with cheese and mustard, fries, and Coke Zero!
