East Texas Students Get Creative With Homecoming Mums

Homecoming mums are a big deal in Texas.

Other states don't quite get the greatness of this homecoming flower all done up with ribbons, glitz, and glam, but here in Texas students try to outdo each other with the biggest, wildest mum creations. And this weekend, Tyler students are getting together to learn the best ways to top each other.

Each homecoming mum -- short for chrysanthemum -- usually has flowers ringed with bows, and trailed by yards and yards of colored ribbons. Just about anything can be attached from there, including football trinkets, sequins, and maybe even licorice or a selfie stick, who knows.

The video proves how nuts Texans are over these things.

The City of Tyler says students from Robert E. Lee, John Tyler and Whitehouse High Schools created mums recently in red, white and black with the plan to donate them to the student body at Van High School.

There's also a workshop coming up this weekend where students can make their own mums for upcoming homecoming events. They've extended the registration deadline by a week, so the final day to register for the mum-making session is this Friday, Sept. 19.

The Mum Making class happens at the library at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and $15 or $20 will get you signed up with most of the materials. Click HERE for all the details.
