Will Texas Finally Legalize Gambling in 2025?
Texas lawmakers are once again debating whether to legalize gambling in the state. Supporters believe it could bring in billions of dollars and create jobs, while opponents worry about the negative effects, like addiction and crime. In the 2023 session, a bill to allow casinos came close to passing but ultimately failed. Now, according to a story from KHOU, the issue is back on the table for 2025.

What Do Texans Think?
As you might imagine, public opinion on gambling is mixed. A poll from the Texas Politics Project found that about 30% of people support looser gambling laws, while another 30% want stricter rules. Meanwhile, 26% are fine with keeping things as they are. This split shows that Texans are torn between the economic benefits and the potential downsides of legal gambling.
The Biggest Challenge? Changing the Law
For gambling to become legal in Texas, lawmakers must pass a constitutional amendment. This means two-thirds of both the House and Senate must agree, and then Texas voters would have the final say. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has been a strong opponent, saying that previous efforts failed because they didn’t have enough bipartisan support.
As the 2025 session unfolds, the future of gambling in Texas is still up in the air. While some lawmakers push for new casinos and sports betting, others worry about the risks. The final decision will come down to whether they can find enough common ground to move forward.
