Tyler Animal Shelter Running Low on Pet Food — Here’s How to Help
(Tyler, Texas) If you're looking to adopt a dog or cat here in East Texas, well, you're in luck because our local shelters have a wide variety of dogs and cats for you to adopt, so they may give you all of the love and affection that they have.
The goals for most dogs are to run and play, eat, and please their owner. Cats, on the other hand, can be very temperamental. Some will give you affection while others will choose to ignore you, and you never know what kind of personality it's going to have until you adopt it and take it home with you.
As you can imagine, caring for these unwanted animals takes a lot of money, along with many volunteer hours. Shelters are often operated by volunteers and receive assistance from the public.
SPCA of East Texas Faces Food Shortage
Currently, the SPCA of East Texas is caring for 220 animals, and they are turning to East Texans for some much-needed support.
Food for these animals is running low, and they are struggling to keep up with feeding the more than 200 dogs and 80 cats in their care. As with grocery prices, the price for dog and cat food has increased significantly along with other needed supplies.
Emily Heglund, the executive director for the SPCA of East Texas, says the facility will go through 135 pounds of adult dog food and 140 pounds of puppy food each week.
This is a lot of food for these animals, and those figures do not take into account the dogs that are in foster care, for which they provide food for too.
The shelter has put out a plea to the community for assistance.
Why IAMS Brand Food Is Needed
To keep the animals on a consistent diet and brand of food, they are looking for donations of food from the IAMS brand. Heglund says any size bag of food for dogs or cats is greatly appreciated and helps out.
