‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Mayans MC’ Gets Script Order With Elgin James
Just a few short weeks ago, Sons of Anarchy boss Kurt Sutter gave a vague update that the FX biker drama spinoff had moved forward, something the network now formalizes. Not only does the tentatively-titled Mayans MC spinoff has a script order, but a co-creator and showrunner in Little Birds alum Elgin James.
Where recently Sutter promised an update amid possible set scouting, Deadline now reports that FX has issued an official Mayans MC script order with James both writing the pilot script and producing. According to the official description, Mayans MC will be a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.”
Perhaps most intriguing is the description of James’ personal experience, as Sutter had previously (and rightfully) deemed his own voice inexperienced to convey the Latin culture:
James’ bio reads like the story of a SOA character. Homeless as a teenager, he was a fixture in Boston’s hardcore punk scene, helping found a multi-ethnic national street gang that targeted neo-Nazi skinheads and drug dealers. After spending a decade and a half in the gang, James left Boston for Los Angeles, where he entered the Sundance Institute Feature Film program. His directorial debut, Little Birds, starring Juno Temple and Leslie Mann, premiered in competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. A few months later James began serving a prison sentence for a past gang-related charge of federal extortion.
Last we heard, the spinoff was set in the present day, potentially allowing for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters, but also exploring the biker subculture through a Spanish point of view.
It remains to be seen exactly how much involvement Sutter might have, but will any new details emerge in the coming weeks? What should we hope for from another Sons of Anarchy series?
