Fearless Opossum Stares Down Coyote in North Dallas Showdown
A brave opossum in North Dallas, Texas, recently showed that courage comes in all sizes.
I remember I used to be frightened by opossums.
Let's be honest: when you catch one unawares, those 'smiles' they flash can be a bit... startling. But the more I learned about them, the more my heart softened. They're actually quite amazing creatures. And, as it turns out, they can be quite brave.
In a dramatic wildlife encounter caught on video, the small but fearless opossum stood its ground against a coyote, much larger than itself—and won.

The video, shared by KHOU, captures the tense moment as the coyote circles the opossum. Instead of running away or using its usual “play dead” trick, the opossum hisses and bares its teeth, making it clear that it won’t go down without a fight. The coyote, seemingly caught off guard by the opossum’s boldness, eventually retreats, leaving the little warrior unharmed.
We will likely keep seeing more frequent wildlife encounters in our Texas cities.
As cities expand, wild animals like opossums and coyotes learn to live alongside people. Encounters like this are becoming more common, especially in areas where food and shelter are easy to find.
Experts recommend keeping trash bins secured, avoiding leaving pet food outside, and bringing small pets indoors at night to reduce the chances of unwanted wildlife visitors.
While opossums may look intimidating when defending themselves, they are generally harmless and even helpful.
Howso?
They eat pests like ticks, cockroaches, and rodents, making them great natural pest controllers.
Wildlife experts encourage people to observe these animals from a distance and respect their role in the ecosystem.
And please, be kind.
