New Texas State Park Coming to Hill Country Soon
(Mix 93-1) When it comes to outdoor recreational activities, Texas has an ample supply of them. There are thrilling activities for everyone and for all skill levels. For wakeboarding, hiking, fossil finding, mountain climbing, fishing, mountain biking, camping, or boating, there is a Texas State Park nearby where you can enjoy those activities.
It's not necessarily always a physical activity either. You could simply go on a picnic, watch for wildlife, stargaze into the night sky, learn about history, or photograph some great views while in a Texas State Park.
Sometimes my wife and I will take a day and head to Tyler State Park with the dog and go for a walk on the trails around the lake. Getting out in nature to enjoy what we've been given is relaxing and recharging.
Texans are extremely lucky people because the state legislature has set aside so much land for Texans and visitors to enjoy. Currently, the state has 88 state parks covering more than 640,000 acres, which are managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).
Texas state parks system is growing
The State of Texas recently acquired thousands of acres in Central Texas that will be preserved and turned into a state park. The land that will become a future state park is in Lampasas and Burnet counties, across the river from Colorado Bend State Park and Lake Buchanan, covering more than 3,000 acres.
Its purchase follows another recent addition to the State Park system when Texas Parks and Wildlife acquired 2,020 acres, also in Burnet County.

This property features limestone bluffs, several natural springs, and 1.5 miles of shoreline along Yancey Creek nestled in the Texas Hill Country.

"It’s great to see phase two of the acquisition process come to fruition with the purchase of this 1,100-acre property,” said Jeff Hildebrand, Chairman of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. “This property, combined with the previously purchased 2,020-acre tract near the current Colorado Bend State Park, will offer an exciting new state park experience for Texans."
The new state park will be located about 10 miles upstream from Lake Buchanan. Over the next several months, TPWD will be looking for input from the public to find out what recreational opportunities they would like to see developed inside this new 3000+ acre state park.
