Finally! Texas Army Soldiers Will Have Pizza
If it's a Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) for the troops, it can't spoil, and it has to have a shelf life of two or three years. The average slice of pizza has trouble living up to those standards, but finally, the Army has found a way to make it happen.
Soldiers have been asking for it since the 1980s, so this news of ready-made pizza for the troops isn't exactly instant gratification. It's taken the combat food engineers a long time to research the best way to make the pizza MRE, and after six years of intense trial and error, they've finally come upon a way to make a pie that will have a shelf life of three years. The mozzarella cheese on the pizza is specifically made to withstand desert heat. That might also come in handy in the backyard on a hot summer day, but that's beside the point.
The pizza MRE will start with one topping — pepperoni — and the package will also contain cherry blueberry cobbler, a cheese spread with cheddar and jalapeno cheese, Italian breadsticks, cookies, and chocolate protein drink powder.
With most Americans eating pizza once a week if not more, it only seems fair that those fighting on our behalf should have it too. The pizza MRE will be available to troops as soon as the end of the year and to most soldiers within 18 months.
