• On average one person is killed every eight hours on a Texas road in an alcohol-related traffic crash.
  • Drive Sober. No Regrets. Enforcement campaign underway in Texas this Labor Day weekend.
  • Designate a sober driver or call a ride share for a safe ride home.

This Labor Day weekend if you're doing any traveling on Texas highways and city streets, you'll most likely see an increased law enforcement presence. They are looking for those that appear to be driving while impaired.

While Labor Day weekend signifies the unofficial end of summer, Texans will be celebrating with friends and family all weekend long and some may take things a bit too far and get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

As you enjoy your much-deserved three-day weekend there is a good chance that alcohol is going to be a part of the celebration. Just know that if you choose to drink and don't arrange for a safe ride home from a sober person and you get behind the wheel of your vehicle impaired, there is the chance that you encounter law enforcement.

If you get behind the wheel and drive under the influence of alcohol you are not only putting your own life at risk, but you are jeopardizing countless lives of innocent people all around you. If you happen to cause a wreck you could not only change your life forever but the lives of the people you run into and their families too.

As the Texas Department of Public Safety says,

EVERY DRUNK DRIVING FATALITY IS PREVENTABLE.

That's the plain and simple truth. Texas DPS and TxDOT want to prevent these horrible incidents and save lives by encouraging those who choose to drink to make the right choice. That choice would be to arrange for a sober ride home with a trusting friend, ride share service, cab, or public transportation if available.

According to TxDOT, the numbers for alcohol-related crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend of 2023 are astonishing:

  • 334 DUI-alcohol related traffic crashes
  • 14 fatalities
  • 35 serious injuries

Texas law enforcement wants you to have fun this Labor Day weekend but do it responsibly. If you make the choice to drink, do so knowing you're sober ride home has already been arranged.

One more statistic from TxDOT - November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX
