Dollar General Plans Closures; Will Texas Stores Be Affected?
(KTYL-FM) - Drive through any small town in Texas, and you'll most likely see a yellow sign with big black block letters spelling out "DOLLAR GENERAL" stretching across a metal building.
Dollar General is considered a lifesaver to many small towns and communities across Texas. If you run out of a staple item, you can hit up the DG real quick for some milk, bread, or chips or if you're out of cleaning supplies, they'll have them for you, or any number of other things, beach towels, motor oil, cosmetics, books, garden hoses, or charging cords for your electronics.
These stores are vital for many in East Texas, Texas and throughout the US, but with any retail business, Dollar General has noticed a slide in revenue and customer traffic and announced it would be closing around 100 of their underperforming stores.
In an earnings report last week, the company announced plans to close 96 of its Dollar General branded stores along with 45 pOpshelf stores. The decision came after a careful review of the company portfolio and based on individual store performance, future expectations, and operating conditions.

Dollar General operates around 20,000 stores in the US and the anticipated closure of these 100 stores represents less than 1% of its business.
Details on specific store closures have not been announced yet, so we're not sure if any of the Texas stores will be affected.
According to the Investor Relations report, the company still looks to be heading in the right direction. Dollar General forecasts growth this year and plans on converting some of the pOpshelf stores to Dollar General stores.
Let's hope none of those yellow signs with the black block letters that spell out 'Dollar General' get removed leaving behind an empty building. We've already got enough of them from previous businesses going bankrupt and going out of business.
