The CBGB Festival went on over the weekend in New York to celebrate the legacy of the legendary club that helped launch so many rock careers. One of the keynote speakers during the event was Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic, who somewhat let the cat out of the bag that he is working on something with fellow Nirvana alumnus Dave Grohl.
The Smashing Pumpkins and EMI Music are continuing their ambitious reissue campaign with the band’s entire catalog. The new entry into the series is the unlikely platinum-selling compilation disc, ‘Pisces Iscariot,’ which is set to be released later this month.
Radiohead have suffered a set back after the tragic stage collapse incident that claimed the life of their friend and drum tech earlier this month in Toronto. The U.K. band was forced to postpone several European tour dates that immediately followed the June 16 show, but have now announced the rescheduled itinerary.
In what seemed like stars were aligning in Amsterdam over the weekend, mega rock stars Eddie Vedder and Tom Petty were on stage together to perform two of the latter’s songs. Watch fan footage of the Pearl Jam leader join Petty and his Heartbreakers on ‘The Waiting’ and ‘American Girl’ below.
Chris Cornell has been getting intimate with audiences across the world during his acoustic Songbook Tour over the past year. The Soundgarden recently played a solo show in London, where he broke out a rendition of the Beatles‘ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ classic ‘A Day in the Life.’
Since reuniting in 2004, new material from the Pixies has been scarce. The influential alt rock band has only released two new songs since their reunion — an original track called ‘Bam Thwok’ and a cover of Warren Zevon’s ‘Ain’t That Pretty At All’ – despite a successful world tour. Now it seems Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell let the cat out of the bag that the Pixies are finally working on new material.
The Smashing Pumpkins broke new ground when they released their double-disc, epic ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ back in 1995. Now, Pumpkins mastermind Billy Corgan claims that a deluxe edition of ‘Mellon Collie’ could contain material from up to 75 unreleased tracks.
It’s no secret that R.E.M. have made a huge impact on the career of Radiohead. Their early ’90s sound reflected a lot on what Michael Stipe and Co. were doing at the time, and Radiohead singer Thom Yorke said Stipe personally called him to let him know R.E.M. were calling it a day last September. Over the weekend, Radiohead played tribute to the band with a live cover of the R.E.M. hit ‘The One I Love.’
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers axeman John Frusciante has kept a pretty low profile as of late. He even declined an invitation to join his old bandmates during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month. Apparently, the guitarist decided to wait until all that buzz was over with to announce the release of his new EP, ‘Letur Lefr.’
The Smashing Pumpkins have been busy releasing new music ever since leader Billy Corgan announced his 44-song project ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ in 2009. The band is about to release ‘Oceania,’ an “album within an album.” Drummer Mike Byrne describes the record as “a whole different set of ascetics.”
