You Won’t Be Able to Reach Me Thursday Night, September 27

Transformers: The Movie will be back in theaters for one night only Thursday night, September 27. I have my ticket and so ready.

I was 9 years old when this came to theaters in 1986. There's was some scandal about Transformers: The Movie at the time. Mostly because of the violence. In the first 20 minutes we see a whole slew of Autobots and Decepticons die. In a kids movie.

The whole scene where Optimus Prime is on the table with everyone around him, says "till all are one", his body turns gray and head falls to the side. I still tear up when I watch it. How could you kill Optimus Prime?

The voice acting, though. Wow. It was the final acting role for Orson Welles as the voice of Unicron. Leonard Nimoy as the voice of Galvatron, Judd Nelson as Rodimus Prime, Robert Stack (the host of Unsolved Mysteries) as Ultra Magnus, Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) as Wreck-Gar and, of course, Frank Welker as Megatron and Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.

But even with all that talent, Transformers: The Movie bombed at the box office in 1986, taking in just under $6 million during it's run, or $15 million after inflation.

But to us Transformers diehards, like myself, this movie is the cream of the crop. Every time I hear Stan Bush "The Touch", I think of Transformers: The Movie. Or Weird Al Yankovic's "Dare to Be Stupid", I remember the scene on the junk planet.

Of course, it has been remastered and will glorious on the big screen. Feel free to join me Thursday night, September 27. I'll share some popcorn with you.
