Will Tyler Junior College Drop the ‘Junior?’

For more than 90 years, students have been attending Tyler Junior College, and now the school is considering a name change.

With the implementation of Bachelor Degree programs at TJC, the expanding opportunities have led the school's accrediting agency to question whether or not they should change the name.

"Times are changing,” Cheryl Rogers, a TJC alum and former faculty member told KLTV. “The fact that we can do bachelor’s degrees right here now. I’m not sure I would want my diploma to say I have my bachelor’s degree from Tyler Junior College."

A private research organization was hired to determine how the name was currently perceived and to explore new options, if needed.

Director of research, Jeff Webster told KLTV, "When asked directly if they would like to change the name or retain the name, roughly 40 percent wanted to retain it and 25 percent thought it would be better if there was a change."

TJC has considered changing the name of the school before. KLTV reported that notes from a 1949 board meeting revealed that trustees considered the name Texas Eastern College and Rosemont College.

No determination has been made of yet to change the name.
