Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the library in Tyler, Texas. This article isn’t to throw criticism toward the people that keep things running, because I am sure that is not an easy job but I do believe there is something that we could change about the library that would make it used by more people. The one change that I suggest for the library in Tyler, Texas is to get rid of the fee that it charges people if you live outside the city limits.

As you will see by clicking here, on the City of Tyler website there is a page for the library and it states that people not living in the city limits are still eligible to get a library card but have to pay $10 per month. You can pay $50 for six months, or $90 for the year, but for a kid that just wants to read some books that just doesn’t seem right.

Libraries Should Encourage People

When I was growing up I didn’t read very much, but as an adult I have found some books that really got my attention and have found a love for reading. I just want these fees to go away so hopefully some kids can find that book that makes them love reading. While I do understand that everyone in city limits are using some of the property tax money to fund the library, we need to make it easy and fun for kids at the library or else they won’t go.

Next Steps for Free Library Services in Tyler, Texas

While I’m not exactly sure what steps need to be taken to remove these fees I would love to see something happen soon. Maybe it starts by waiving all fees for residents of Smith County, but I am just throwing out ideas now. Kids have so many options to play games electronically, let’s make it easy for them if they want to put down the video games and pick up a book.
