Texas has more than 314,000 miles of public roads, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). With so many miles of road, there is more than one way to get to that special weekend destination.
You can take the quick way to get out of East Texas by taking a major highway like US Hwy 69, 271, 259, or I-20 or I-30 to get from East Texas to Dallas, Houston, Shreveport, Oklahoma and you'll get there in no time, but think about all the beauty you're going to miss along the way.
Or you could take a road less traveled and check out the beauty and charm of Texas and some small Texas towns and communities along the way.
Take for instance a trip from Tyler to Dallas.
You could hop on Hwy 69 N and take the straight shot to Dallas on I-20 or head out of town on Hwy 64 West for a different view. Once you pass Toll 49 on Hwy 64 W you can take FM 279 and take a beautiful drive through Edom, then on to Ben Wheeler, and eventually back on 64 to Canton.
Along the way, you'll see some low-lying wetland areas, beautiful farmland, lots of trees, two quaint East Texas cities, and lots of friendly folks.
