35 People Booked Into The Smith County Jail Facing Felony Charges

Drinking and driving remains a huge problem in East Texas. Just last week we reported that there were more than 650 DUI-related crashes in the Tyler TXDOT region in 2023. This area includes Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Henderson, Rusk, Smith, Van Zandt, and Wood counties.

East Texans MUST DO BETTER and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for their actions when it comes to drinking and driving. If you go out for dinner, a reception, or a party and you drink alcoholic drinks, know your limits be the responsible one, and make arrangements to get yourself home safely.

The report released by the Texas Department of Transportation said there were 46 fatalities in the Tyler region alone in 2023. Drinking and driving arrests continue to rank high in Smith and Gregg County.

There were many arrests in Smith County during the first weekend of summer, 102. Of those, 35 of them are now facing a felony charge. It could be for possession of a controlled substance, indecency/sexual abuse of a child, bringing a prohibited substance into a correctional facility, aggravated assault, theft of a firearm, and more including driving under the influence.

While this listing may show a couple of people arrested for driving under the influence X3, which is a felony charge, there were many other individuals that were arrested for the first or second time for DUI. First or second-time DUI offenders are often charged with misdemeanors.
