Even though the Red Hot Chili Peppers are in the midst of a massive spring tour, they have a big weekend ahead of them. The Grammy Award winners will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on Saturday night. The Chili Peppers are looking forward to paying tribute to past members who helped shape the legacy of the band.

The current Chilis lineup — bassist Flea, vocalist Anthony Kiedis, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — will be honored along with past bandmates like late founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died of a drug overdose in 1988, and John Frusciante, who replaced Slovak and recorded five albums with the group. Frusciante departed from the Chili Peppers back in 2009.

“We wouldn’t be here without [Slovak] because we wouldn’t have started without him,” Flea told the Associated Press. “For him to be honored and recognized is a beautiful thing for us, not that we don’t honor and love him every day, but I feel great for him to go in, as well as John Frusciante, of course, who gave us so much and did some serious [expletive] rocking.”

“It’s funny,” said Kiedis. “People have asked me, ‘Did you ever think you would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?’ It’s a funny question because the answer is, ‘Of course not.’ When we started, we thought maybe in periods of 24 hours at a time. The most we would ever think is a week at a time: ‘Oh, we have a gig next Thursday. We should write a song.’ ”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be inducted by their good friend in comedian Chris Rock. Other acts who will be inducted include Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys and more. GN’R leader Axl Rose caused a stir earlier this week by releasing a statement rejecting his hall of fame induction.

The Chili Peppers were just announced as a headliner for this year’s Lollapalooza in Chicago. The band have also added more dates to their North American tour, which you can see below.
