Much of the country, including Tyler, saw record breaking hit Wednesday.

Tyler hit 96 degrees at 2:41pm Tuesday, which tied the daily record high temperature for the day. We also hit 96 on this day back in 1977. Longview did not break a record Wednesday. 94 was the high in Longview, but the record stood strong at 98 degrees set back in 1953.

This comes in the middle of a record breaking heat wave across much of the United States. On Wednesday, dozens of major cities either tied or broke the daily record high temperature. Wednesday was the second day of this, as Tuesday was another day of historic heat across the eastern half of the United States.

While record heat is not expected in the coming days, we could be close Thursday. Forecast highs are in the middle 90s, and the record for Thursday is currently 97 degrees set back in 1989. Going forward, there looks to be little relief from the heat. Long term data from the Climate Prediction Center indicates that we have a good chance to see above normal temperatures for pretty much the rest of the year. That being said, it’s going to be getting a little bit better. The normal high drops to 72 degrees by early November, and by early December the normal high will hit 60 degrees. So even though we’ll likely be above normal most days in the coming months, the normal high is dropping a good amount.
