Who is Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most legendary southern rock bands of all time. Originally formed in 1964, Skynyrd has been a rock and roll staple since signing a record deal with MCA in 1972. Their debut album 'Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd' is widely considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The is certified double platinum and features some of the band's biggest songs including 'Gimme Three Steps', 'Simple Man', 'Tuesday's Gone' and 'Freebird'. The album ranked number 381 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums ever made.

In 1977, their plane crashed on the way to Baton Rouge to play at LSU. Several members of the band's original lineup died in the crash including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Following the crash, the surviving members of the band disbanded until 1987. Ronnie's younger brother Johnny took over as the band's lead singer. Allen Collins, who was paralyzed in the crash, served as the band's musical director.

Many of the original members of the band who survived the plane crash, have retired from performing full time. Gary Rossington is the one original member of the band who has consistently been involved since the very beginning. Rickey Medlocke, who joined the band in 1971, is also still involved and a regular touring member of the band.

Legendary Musicians Who Rocked The Hirsch In Shreveport

Here's a sample of the legendary musical acts who have played Shreveport's Memorial Coliseum over the last 60 years. The Hirsch was basically the homefield for bands like Van Halen and ZZ Top, who regularly put the Hirsch near the top of their tours. For that reason, we're actually not going to feature them on this list, because they were basically "house bands" for Shreveport...and that's NOT a bad thing.
