Kids Get Cell Phones at Age 6 on Average
How long do you hold off before getting your kid a cell phone?
The average age for kids to get cell phones is 6, according to Vouchercloud's new survey. What are your thoughts on that? Too soon? Just right?
I've got three girls that are 6, 5, and 3, and I don't want them to have their own phones until they're about 20. I'm not really afraid of what they might find online or that they might get into some bad texting...yet. I'm just tired of screens!
They've got access to TV, Wii, Kindles, the laptop, Leap Frog learning pads, and my old smart phones, and all of that is screen overload. The last thing I want is for them to curl up on the couch in front of the TV with a smart phone and poke buttons all night.
The most common reason parents get a cell phone for kids is for security. Other parents said it was to let the kids keep up with friends at school.
There is probably no blanket right or wrong answer when it comes to getting kids their first cell phone. It's whatever works for each family. I'd just prefer to hold off on the emojis, LOLs, and bombardment of texts for awhile longer.
