Although the US population under the age of 20 has decreased by more than 13% since 1970, Texas is actually getting younger.

While the birthrate remained relatively steady in the early 2000s, between 2007 and 2020, the birthrate decreased to nearly 1 million fewer babies. The birth rate even decreased by around 4% between 2019 and 2020.

Despite the country as a whole having a smaller population under 20, Texas is one of the states with the largest young population.

In 2020, around 28% of Texas’ population was under the age of 20 years old. Making it the state with the second highest percentage of young people living within it’s population.

The young Texas population has even increased by 26.4% since 2000, which is only outpaced by Utah and Nevada.

This higher population is attributed to higher birthrates and lower death rates, leading to an overall larger population under 20. Texas is actually an odd-one-out within the top ten states with the highest young population because half of the states are located in the Midwest.

Utah, Texas, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota are in the top five and have a growing young population that goes against most of the country's trends.

Other areas have high birth rates as well, like Washington, DC. They have the fourth highest birthrate in the country however, their higher death rate leads to an overall lower population under 20.

More information including a variety of great graphics can be found at USAFacts.org.

The USA is also one of the countries with the highest young population compared to other parts of the world. SO, while we may see numbers drop compared to our past birthrates, other countries are seeing this worse.
