Your Vehicle Registration Only Lasts for So Many Days Past Expiration in Texas
(Tyler, Texas) - Recent laws have made it easier to get our vehicles registered each year. Before, we had to take it to a licensed shop to get our vehicle's safety components inspected. If those components didn't pass inspection, we had to get them fixed before our vehicle could pass. We couldn't renew the registration on our vehicle until it got a passing grade.
Since last year, we are no longer required to do that. We simply have to take the registration we get in the mail to the tax office, or we can mail it in with a check or money order, and we get a new sticker for the year. It's much easier to get it all done now.
My Embarrassing Texas Registration Sticker Fail
Back in January of 2019, I found the registration envelope for my car in a drawer of paperwork I had. My registration was suppossed to have been done in July of the previous year (2018). Basically, I had been driving around for six months with an expired registration sticker.
How I had not been pulled over and ticketed for it was beyond me. I took my car in to get it inspected (because you had to do that at the time) and got my new registration sticker. I was so embarrassed that I never noticed the expired tag. But I got it done and my car was legal again to drive.

How Long Can You Legally Drive with an Expired Registration in Texas?
It still baffles me why I didn't do it and how I never noticed the expiration. So how long do you legally have to renew the registration before getting a ticket? It's five business days (statutes.capitol.texas.gov). So if your registration is due in May, you have until the fifth business day in June to get it done.
When I was at the tax office getting my long overdue registration done in 2019, I asked the clerk three questions:
- If I had let it go for the full year, would I have received the letter to renew the registration for my vehicle for next year? According to the very nice clerk I talked to, I wouldn't.
- Could I have lost my vehicle, i.e. could someone have filed for a lost title or another avenue to get my vehicle? No. There is a whole other process to do that.
- Why did I get a December date to get the next sticker as opposed to the original July date? Each month that it's not registered past the original date, the registration is extended 11 months out from when you came in. I came in in January of that year, so December of that same year, I had to renew again.
I Learned My Lesson About Expired Vehicle Registration in Texas
Since that day in 2019, I have always remembered to get my registration done on time. I won't be making that same "adult failure" again.
