Well fall is here, even though it may not feel like it. It’s going to start looking like it… kind of. By that we mean it’s getting darker earlier and earlier.

With fall comes later sunrises and earlier sunsets, resulting in less daylight hours. And Friday September 27, we will fall below 12 hours of daylight in Tyler.

On the 23rd, the sun will rise at 7:12am and set at 7:11pm, resulting in 11 hours and 59 minutes of daylight. It’s only going to get worse from here. Now through early December, the sun will set earlier and earlier each day. In early December, the sunset is at 5:15pm. That’s the earliest it will be for us here in Tyler. As for the sunrise, it gets later and later through early to mid-January, where the sunrise is at 7:23am. As for daylight hours, the least that we’ll see is just over 10 hours in mid-December.

Now some of you may be thinking this info. is not correct. You may be thinking that we hit 12 hours of daylight on the Autumnal equinox. Well some parts of the globe did… but not us. We’re at a higher latitude than the equator, so our point of 12 hours of daylight/12 hours of darkness is a bit later.

With less daylight, comes less sunlight and cooler temperatures. By mid-December, the normal high will be down into the middle to upper 50s. The normal high drops a few degrees more by January, then will start to rise again.

Also with less daylight hours, comes a change in our health. More specifically our sleep habits. Doctors often warn that it’s important to maintain a consistent sleep schedule regardless of when the sun sets or rises. This will help us maintain regular and good health.
