Summer is in full swing in East Texas. Watch out though because the first day of school for the 2024-2025 school year will be here before you know it. In fact, the first day of school for some East Texas school districts is less than a month away.

So there are about three weeks left to squeeze in that last-minute family summer vacation. After that it's all about back-to-school clothes shopping and getting everything on the school supplies list to get the kids prepared for the new school year. If you can hold off until right before school, you'll be able to save some money during the Texas Sales Tax Holiday weekend.

I do have some sympathy for kids because their summer break is around two months. That's just two months for summer fun. I suppose I was lucky because when I was in school our summer breaks were three months long! Now, it's averaging a little over two months. However, there is a trade-off because many districts insert a fall break into their academic calendars.

The main reason for shorter summers is because of standardized testing and then there's fall athletics, schools need to start earlier to get everything they need to teach squeezed into the school year.

Right now when you walk into Walmart, Target, or any store selling school supplies you'll see they're already set up to get your student equipped for the new school year. So grab that school supplies list and get everything early while it's in stock.

Several East Texas school districts have adopted and moved to a 4-day instructional week. This could be a welcomed change for students and could serve as a motivator to get them excited for the new school year.

Below is a list of school districts along with their first day of school for the 2024-2025 school year. When you click on the school name you'll be directed to the official school calendar:
