Making Peanut Butter and Jelly in Space Is a Culinary Adventure Like No Other

This classic sandwich is a breeze to make on the ground. Not so much when you’re in orbit.
NASA’s Johnson Space Center has posted this rather interesting video featuring Expedition 50 commander Shane Kimbrough making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Yeah, he’s making PB&J in space, where gravity is harder to come by than a kid who wants the crusts to remain on.
Cutting the crusts off is actually not even an issue here. That’s because bread in space just doesn’t work — it can go stale and crumbs are liable to cause problems with the equipment. A tortilla goes a lot further (well, figuratively speaking, anyway).
As you can see, making the sandwich isn’t so easy. When you’re ingredients can float away, your eyes need to be as quick as your hands before you can get the sustenance that even an astronaut millions of miles away from home needs.
