With a rather wet summer behind us, East Texas has been drying out for the past month or so and it has been quite a while since we've seen any measurable rainfall anywhere in the region. Due to the lack of rainfall and drying conditions, several East Texas counties have enacted burn bans across their counties.

You wouldn't normally relate burn bans with the fall because of the cooler weather, but since there hasn't been consistent rainfall, things are drying out and are just as bad as when the summer heat is baking the Texas soil.

Several county judges and commissioners enacted burn bans across their counties this week. It is illegal to burn in the following counties as of October 20, 2017:

  • Cass
  • Marion
  • Harrison
  • Panola
  • Gregg
  • Rusk
  • Cherokee
  • Kaufman

With these burn bans enacted, it is illegal to do any kind of outdoor burning of anything. If you are caught burning you could receive a citation. If you need more information on burn bans, contact your local county court or check out the Texas A&M Forest Service website.

Hopefully though we'll see some relief with an approaching cool front that is expected to move through Sunday.  There is a 70% chance of rain Sunday morning!  Let's hope we all see some!
