UT Austin Offers Free Tuition
All of a sudden we have even more reasons to yell "Hook 'em!".
With student loan debt and college tuition costs being at an all-time high, many Americans are left wondering how they can afford to send their kids to college. Texas families who bring in less than $65,000 a year can rest easy knowing their kids can get free tuition at the University of Texas Austin.
Texans have Oil and Gas to thank for the Texan sized funding. The UT System's Board of Regents voted to establish a Permanent University Fund that would obtain the oil and gas royalties earned from state-owned land.
Chairman Kevin Eltife and Chancellor James B. Milliken, led the regents. They voted unanimously on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, for the $160 million endowment. It will start aiding students as soon as the fall 2020 semester. Chairman Eltife said in a statement that “This will benefit students of our great state for years to come”.
I am the proud aunt to three Longhorns! My nieces Vivian and Amaris along with my nephew Carlos worked so hard to get into UT Austin. Every time one of them found out they had gotten into UT Austin my whole family freaked out with excitement. In fact, we are already teaching my 4-year-old nephew Edison to "Hook 'em!"
I asked my niece Amaris what she thought of the news and she said: "I think it's pretty amazing that they are choosing to use their oil money to help students who need it."
