One of Tyler's busiest parks could be getting a facelift with new playground equipment as early as June of this year. The new plan was approved by the Tyler City Council yesterday and it includes a new all inclusive playground.

The upgrade to Southside Park's existing playground depends upon donations solicited from the community though. The fundraising has already begun thanks in part to the Tyler Area AMBUCS, Tyler Sunrise Rotary, the City of Tyler and Child's Play Incorporated of Dallas. Plans are underway and call for two separate age appropriate playgrounds, along with an enclosed sports court, updated pavilion, a music garden that all include ramps so that all areas may be wheelchair accessible. The plans do come with a price tag though, costs for the new park equipment and infrastructure are estimated to be around $750,000. Once the money is raised and donated to the city, the project will move forward.

Organizers are confident though that the funds will be raised by June and in the mean time leading up to the build date, the City of Tyler Parks Department will be working with Child's Play Incorporated on the layout and concrete work.

Parks Director Stephanie Rollings says,

Getting our children fit and active is an important part of maintaining a healthy community. A great facility like this will give children and parents, of all abilities, the opportunity to play and enjoy the outdoors.”

Southside Park is located at the intersection of Shiloh Road and Donnybrook Ave. If you would like to make a donation to help the project, please contact Tyler Area AMBUCS, Tyler Sunrise Rotary or the City of Tyler Parks Department.
