Have you been to Caldwell Zoo since it opened its new African Overlook area? Just get a load of some of the photos and video we were able to get when we went last week. It took 18 months to construct and quadrupled the size of the elephant pond - so you can see more elephants up close and personal.

Here are some of the animals you can find at the new African Overlook:

  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Impala
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeests
  • Ostrich
  • Lions

One of the coolest things is that patrons can feed the giraffes heads of lettuce right from their habitat. Sadly, when we were there they were a bit shy - but they do come out!

We also got a look behind the scenes thanks to Executive Director since 1976, Hayes Caldwell (his uncle - DK Caldwell - started the zoo in his backyard in Tyler!). When we entered the meal prep area, we learned that the dedicated team at Caldwell Zoo feeds 3,400 animals daily! And when we went to the actual kitchen, the vegetables looked fresher than the ones in my own refrigerator!

Come out to Caldwell Zoo this summer. All of the exhibits are open (and expected to stay open)

Come check out this amazing local zoo while you have the time this summer. Caldwell Zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Free parking for all guests.
