First ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer: Hey, Those Aren’t the Real Avengers
You feel that? That tingling Spidey sense? That can only mean one thing: The very first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer has finally arrived. Two trailers, actually — the official domestic trailer and an international trailer with even more footage, featuring our first look at Michael Keaton’s Vulture, helpful life advice from Tony Stark, some fake Avengers, and all the awkward pain of high school.
You have to admit, it’s pretty awesome to see the Marvel Studios logo before a new Spider-Man movie. Sure, we’ve been fooled before (that first Amazing Spider-Man trailer was fun, too), but after spending a little time with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker / Spidey in Civil War, our optimism feels earned this time around.
And hey, this is a really fun trailer. Spidey confronts bank robbers hilariously wearing plastic Avengers Halloween masks, and he gets some advice from Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, including — most importantly — “Don’t do anything I would do. And don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
The new trailers also reveal our first look at Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture, whose costume is a little different from what we expected…in a good way. Earlier today, USA Today ran a feature on Homecoming, in which director Jon Watts briefly discussed the film’s approach to villains, noting that, if an average kid like Peter Parker could become a superhero, then surely there are some average Joes out there just waiting to become villains. You can see that reflected in the core of Toomes’ costume, which isn’t overly elaborate — just a helmet and a fur-trimmed coat:
But then…there’s this shot, in which you can see the way more elaborate aspects of The Vulture’s get-up:
How does an average guy-turned-villain get his hands on a costume like that? Probably with a little help from The Tinkerer, played by Michael Chernus (Orange Is the New Black) — he’s not featured in either trailer, by the way.
What we do see are quick peeks at some of Peter Parker’s high school friends and peers, played by Zendaya and Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys), and some great moments between Peter and his BFF, Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon (is he holding a LEGO Death Star? What is that?).
Here’s the international version, with extra footage:
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
