In a unanimous vote, the Smith County Commissioners on Tuesday cleared the way allowing voters to decide this November on the sale of beer and wine in JP Precinct 2.

The proposition calls for a special election to be held November 6 for the sale of beer & wine off premises, and to extend the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants to current city limits.

Last week, the Tyler City Council also voted to call a special election on the sale of beer and wine within the city limits.

The group “Buy Local First” petitioned the sale of beer and wine sales in Tyler and Smith County Precinct 2 and collected more than 16,000 signatures, more than enough required to be considered to be placed on the ballot.

The issue has been met with some opposition; “Stand Strong Tyler” argued hundreds of signatures on the petition were invalid, but the county election administrator’s office, the county attorney, and the city of Tyler attorney have all verified those signatures.
