Outrageous Clothing Label Sparks Sexism Outcry
Emma Barnett was shocked when she read the care label on her boyfriend’s pants.
“Machine wash warm. Inside out with like colors. Use only non-chlorine bleach. Tumble dry medium …,” read the tag’s typical instructions. But then there was a kicker: “Or give it to your woman. It’s her job.”
So Barnett, who is a reporter for the London paper ‘The Daily Telegraph,’ tweeted out a picture of the offending label using the hashtag #womenriseup. Her message was immediately the talk of the Twittersphere with some taking offense and others finding it a harmless joke.
According to Barnett, the pants came from the British retailer Madhouse. A spokesperson for the company has already blamed the sexist quip on the “overseas manufacturers” who are responsible for making the labels.
Whoever was responsible, do you think this is over the line? And, in case you are wondering, Barnett wasn’t washing her boyfriend’s pants when she came across the label. She was, however, tidying up their room.
