(KNUE-FM) It was August of 2024 when we heard the sad news that East Texas icon Joe Mack Roy also known as Pop from Pop Watch on social media had passed away. It was heartbreaking because millions of people from all around the world loved Pop and his no nonsense approach to dealing with things in life.

Pop was a good man who shared his humor and wisdom with everyone online, as his grandson Jason did most of the video creation and editing behind the viral videos.

Why Pop Watch Left Such a Big Impact on Texas

For a while prior to Pop passing away I was talking to Jason about how the city of Longview really needed to get a statue of Pop built somewhere as there would be visitors who would sometimes drive hundreds of miles just for a chance to meet Pop.

Unfortunately, there was no statue built, but now it looks like there is a mural that will be created soon for all Pop Watch fans to enjoy.

Details Behind the 12-by-12 Pop and Nan Artwork

Just this past weekend, Jason Roy posted online about a 12-by-12 mural of Pop and Nan being created in Longview. This mural is part of what is supposed to be the largest mural wall in Texas.

A Heartfelt Tribute Pop Never Got to See

While it’s sad that Pop isn’t here to see the mural in the town where he spent so many years, it’s still fantastic that Nan is able to see it. It’s always tough to lose people we care about, and Pop was someone that we all cherished.

Soon, there will be a mural showing respect to both Pop and Nan, and they deserve it.
