The old proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” was brought to life at Billy Earl Dade Middle School in Dallas as 600 men showed up for their event ,‘Breakfast with Dads”. Students were encouraged to bring their fathers or father figures in their lives for breakfast.

ABC News reports that the school was concerned because some of the 150 students did not have a “dad” to participate, so Kristina Dove took to social media in order to seek 50 volunteers for the event. Then the magic happened.

Responses started to roll in before she knew it, nearly 400 mentors showed interest in the event and 600 actually showed up to Billy Earl Dade Middle School.

Throughout the event there were ice breaker sessions, and one of the volunteers Jamil Tucker gave each male adult a tie to teach the kids how to tie a tie - most certainly a father-son moment, something my grandfather taught me.

Kristina Dove works as a children’s advocate at Big Thought, which is a non-profit educational organization and she would like thank the mentors who showed up for “Breakfast with Dads” and hopes they continue working with her on future projects.

As a single father, I know the importance of being active in your children’s lives.  Kudos to the male volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to brighten up a child’s day.
