Michael Douglas on Oprah: Catherine Zeta-Jones Is Doing ‘Great’
This week, actor Michael Douglas sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which he shed more light on wife Catherine Zeta-Jones' recent stay at a mental health facility, where she was being treated for bipolar II disorder.
In the interview airing Tuesday, Douglas said his own personal issues may have contributed to Zeta-Jones' depression.
"My oldest son is in federal prison, my ex-wife is suing me, and I got cancer. It's kind of hard for the wife to say, 'I'm depressed,'" he said, according to ET Online. "So I think that, you know, really probably played a big part of it."
Douglas also added that his wife is doing much better since seeking treatment. "She's great, she's shooting a movie down in Louisiana, and I think she's relieved that she has a better understanding [of bipolar II]," he said.
Zeta-Jones, who in 2003 won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 'Chicago,' reportedly spent about five days in a mental health facility before heading back to work on a movie.
"After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder. She's feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films," her rep told PEOPLE.
