Watch a Clip From ‘London Town,’ a Film Inspired by the Clash

The English punk scene of the '70s is the backdrop of a new film called London Town. You can watch the first clip from the movie, which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Clash frontman Joe Strummer, above.

In the 34-second teaser Rhys Meyers and his Clash bandmates are performing "White Riot" in a packed, sweaty club. NME, where the clip premiered, says that the plot centers around a 14-year-old boy, played by Daniel Huttlestone, who heads to London in search of his mother (Natascha McElhone), who walked away from her family. Upon finding her, she turns him on to the Clash. He subsequently becomes a part of the punk scene and is befriended by his hero. Dougray Scott and Tom Hughes also have starring roles.

Directed by Derrick Borte and written by Matt Brown based on a screenplay by Sonya Gildea and Kirsten Sheridan, London Town had its world premiere last night (June 3) at the L.A. Film Festival, where it is entered in the World Fiction Competition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, IFC Films announced shortly before the screening that they had purchased the U.S. rights to the movie.

“Derrick Borte has crafted a film that is as vibrant and riotous as the time it depicts," said Jonathan Sehring of Sundance Selects and IFC Films. "We are very excited to bring the film to U.S. audiences and make the punk-rock era of the 1970s come alive once more."

This is the second time Rhys Meyers has played a real-life rock legend. In 2005, he starred in a made-for-TV movie about Elvis Presley. The release date of London Town is unknown.
