A lake is an often naturally occurring, relatively large and fixed body of water on or near the Earth's surface. In Texas, a lot of lakes are manmade.

Texas has hundreds of natural lakes, mostly small oxbow lakes that are remnants of rivers that have changed course over time. Caddo Lake in East Texas is considered the only natural lake in the state, formed by a log jam.

Texas has 196 major lakes spread across 15 river basins. The Prairies and Lakes region has the most reservoirs, ranging in size from 65 to 74,686 surface acres.

Texas has 188 major reservoirs with a normal capacity of 5,000 acre-feet or more, not including four that are normally dry and six made up of proximate impoundments.
