Jacksonville ISD Approves New Weapons Detection Systems for Schools
While Texans might not always agree on everything, the safety of kids, especially at school is very important. Which is why I think everyone in East Texas will agree that it’s a good thing that Jacksonville ISD has now approved purchasing a weapon detection system.
According to KETK, there was a special meeting Thursday, Jacksonville ISD trustees unanimously approved the purchase of a new weapons detection system for district campuses. Which makes perfect sense as this was just days after a firearm was discovered at Jacksonville High School on Sept. 25. Luckily, no one was injured.
This new technology will add more security for students as it should prevent dangerous weapons from entering school buildings.
Jacksonville ISD Approves OpenGate Weapons Detectors
The new technology will be in the form of walk-through detection systems made by OpenGate that can identify and flag certain metals commonly found in firearms, knives, and other weapons.

How Much Will Jacksonville ISD Spend?
As you would expect, district officials say this investment is necessary as schools continue to face concerns around campus violence. The district will pay for the systems through its capital fund, with the total cost capped at $500,000.
It will be up to the trustees to determine how many machines are located at each campus before the plan is implemented.

Other East Texas School Districts Are Adding Weapon Detection
Other East Texas districts including Lufkin and Center ISD have already implemented similar technology within their school districts.
Again, all students should not have to worry about their safety while they are in class to get an education. I’m all for this new technology to be implemented. The last thing anyone wants is a tragic incident to take place here in East Texas.
