The Top Texas Cities for the Worst (and Best) Drivers
Every day, we all run into our share of motorists who are an accident waiting to happen. This could be because they are inconsiderate, oblivious, ignorant, or a combination of all three when it comes to driving.
But, is there a way to figure out which cities in Texas have the worst drivers, and for that matter...the best drivers?
Crunching The Numbers on Driving in Texas
ConsumerAffairs crunched some driving data and came up with a way to assign numbers that correspond to how safely or unsafely folks drive in 60 Texas cities. They called the final number a city's 'crash score'.
Why just 60? The study included only cities with a population of 50,000 or more.
Methodology
ConsumerAffairs used the following five factors in coming up with their rankings:
- Number of crashes due to bad driving per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities due to crashes per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities due to speeding per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities due to driving under the influence per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities involving positive blood alcohol content per 100,000 people
The Top Ten Texas Cities with the Worst Drivers (Crash Score Included)
- Galveston - 97.63 (72% gap between Galveston and San Marcos)
- San Marcos - 56.60
- Wichita Falls - 54.64
- Midland - 52.83
- Port Arthur - 50.09
- Odessa - 46.76
- Richardson - 46.59
- Baytown - 46.18
- Longview - 45.03
- Dallas - 44.06
The Top Ten Texas Cities with the Best Drivers (Crash Score Included)
- League City - 2.64
- Frisco - 4.95
- Sugar Land - 5.45
- Mansfield - 8.14
- Pflugerville - 9.30
- North Richland Hills - 9.98
- Pearland - 10.44
- Plano - 10.53
- Victoria - 10.69
- Pharr - 12.59
I find it odd that the safest drivers (League City) and the worst drivers (Galveston) are separated by less than 30 miles. I guess it may have something to do with the amount of tourists and party-goers that go to the island.
