There is a lot of cleaning up going on around Smith County right now thanks to the recent line of thunderstorms and damaging winds that blew through Monday night. In addition to clearing the yard of dead tree limbs and other debris, we're also cleaning out our closets and garages as we do a little spring cleaning.

We realize we've accumulated quite a bit of extra stuff around the house after the holidays and other special occasions have passed and thanks to all this cleaning, we're often left with quite a bit of stuff and wondering how to get rid of it all because the trash service won't pick up everything!

In Smith County, residents can take advantage of the 'Smith Countywide Cleanup' event that is going on now through the end of the month. This program allows residents to receive a voucher from the Smith County Sheriff's Office Environmental Crimes Unit that allows residents to take one truckload of bulky items to the Greenwood Farms Landfill for free. This is an annual event that is coordinated through the Smith County Commissioners Court.

Vouchers for this program may be obtained in person at:

  • Courthouse Annex - 200 E. Ferguson
  • Precinct 1 Constable - 308 E. Ferguson in Tyler
  • Precinct 2 JP/Constable - 15405 Highway 155 South in Noonday
  • Precinct 3 JP/Constable - 313 E. Duval Street in Troup
  • Precinct 4 JP/Constable - 14152 Highway 155 North in Winona
  • Precinct 5 JP/Constable - 2616 S. Main Street in Lindale
  • Whitehouse City Hall - 101 A Bascom Rd.

The landfill will accept most items, including mattresses, which will be limited to one per voucher and additional mattresses would be $50.

However, not all items will be accepted at the Greenwood Farms Landfill.  These items include:

  • hazardous waste
  • pesticides
  • herbicides
  • solvents
  • gasoline
  • oils
  • acid
  • batteries
  • asbestos
  • wet paint
  • freon
  • whole tires
  • televisions
  • computers
  • refrigerators
  • freezers

Cleaning up around your property will also help to reduce the mosquito population later this spring and summer too. Let's all join together and clean up around our property and take advantage of this cleanup event happening now in Smith County.
