It’s hot!! Very hot. Hot enough that not having air conditioning in your car seems like a punishment.

With all the heat, a number of warnings and advisories have been issued for the week. Here's a quick breakdown of what they mean:

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the heat index is at or greater than 110 degrees, or when the air temperature is at or above 105 degrees.

A Heat Advisory is issued when the heat index is at or greater than 105 degrees or the air temperature is at or greater than 103 degrees.

We’ve hit at least 90 degrees all but 5 days since July 1st. The hottest days have been 98 degrees July 22nd and 30th and August 7th. While that’s pretty hot, it’s nowhere near the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded. On August 3rd, 2011, we hit 109.9 degrees in Tyler.

It doesn’t look like the heat is going anywhere anytime soon. According to outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center, our chances to see above-normal temperatures are high through October. The normal high stays at or above 90 degrees through mid-September.

It’s important to remember that it’s not just the heat, but it can also be the humidity. More specifically the dew point. When dew point temperatures are in the 60s, it starts to feel humid. When dew points are in the 70s, it feels muggy. High dew points combined with high temperatures give us at times, a dangerous heat index.

With the heat building in over the coming weeks and months, it’s important to remember some heat safety tips. Remember to drink plenty of water, wear light-colored and loose fitted clothing are some of the simplest things that you can do to keep your body cool. There are more steps and precautions that you can take such as avoiding strenuous activities, finding shade if you’re outside for an extended period of time and be sure to check on loved ones during hot days.
