Have you done any muffin shopping at Costco yet this year? Even so, you still might not be aware of a big change the company made to them.

Reports began as early as November regarding a possible shakeup at Costco bakeries around Texas and the rest of the country. We can confirm that the changes are not a rumor, but a cold-hard fact. Perhaps enough public outcry can make a difference.

Regarding Costco's muffins, there have been some changes to available flavors. But that's taking a back seat to what some a calling a hidden price hike for the popular muffins. Ahh, yes. It's our new friend shrinkflation.

What is shrinkflation? "This is when a company reduces the size of a product while keeping the price the same. This practice is also known as package downsizing or weight-out."

So, what Costco is doing with its muffins isn't the classic definition of shrinkflation, as they are lowering the price of the package. Folks on Reddit are acknowledging that the price of these muffins has gone down, but their size has shrunk much more.

So it may look to a lot of people that they're getting a better deal. But not these eagle-eyed shoppers.

According to this post on Reddit, "Costco is getting rid of its mix-and-match 12-count muffins (two packs of six muffins) for $9.99 and replacing the deal with one pack of eight muffins of the same flavor for $6.99." Which on the surface feels like a savings. But that doesn't add up," says Delish.

The new ones are estimated to be around 70% of the size of the old ones. Therefore, "the eight-count muffins are cheaper than the previous 12-count by $3, the math isn't working in customers' favor. One Redditor did some calculations comparing prices and found that the new muffins are a shocking 58% more expensive per ounce."
