Cinemark is Testing a New Subscription Plan
It's $8.99 per month, and it's an effort to get more of us into the theater seats instead of sitting at home and streaming movies on other platforms. But does the Cinemark subscription plan guarantee us a seat at some of the big crowded blockbusters, like Star Wars? We have questions.
Cinemark announced the new subscription plan this week, and laid out some details.
For $8.99 per month, you'll get one 2D movie ticket per month for the movie of your choice, plus twenty percent off popcorn and other concessions when you scan your membership card at the checkout.
If you don't use the ticket that month, it will roll over to the next month and it never expires.
So, if the "movie of your choice" for the month happens to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the crowds are out of control and theaters are sold out all weekend, will this membership get you in the door? Well, sort of.
It doesn't look like it gives you any priority, but when you reserve your seat you won't pay any extra fees as a member. You'll still have to find a theater that's not sold out and reserve the ticket. And if you have a friend going to the movie too, you don't have to simultaneously cross your fingers and hope you get tickets together in the same theater. As a member, Cinemark says you can buy one extra ticket at checkout for $8.99. That's good for dates.
Are you gonna try it? Cinemark says you can cancel at any time. There are more than 80 Cinemark theaters in Texas, including one in Athens, Rockwall and DFW. May the frugal force be with you.
