A Once Popular And Affordable Way To Get Around The Lone Star State Is No Longer Running.

Megabus, the once popular intercity bus service, had revolutionized affordable travel across North America and Europe. Founded in 2006, Megabus quickly became known for its incredibly low fares, sometimes as low as $1, making it a favorite among budget-conscious travelers.

At its peak, the company routes spanned  over 100 cities in the United States and Canada and extensive networks in the UK and mainland Europe. But like other companies, its struggle to find travelers since the pandemic.

The transportation company announced it was ending its routes in Texas On Aug. 16th.

Routes between Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston were discontinued and customers with tickets booked have been notified and refunds have been processed. Routes between Atlanta, Charlotte, Durham, Richmond, and Washington, D.C. were also discontinued according to the company's website.

The discontinued routes come after Megabus' parent company Coach USA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June citing the COVID-19 pandemic which caused demand in the ridership has remained well below pre-pandemic levels.

The company operated on a "no-frills" model, meaning passengers pay for the essentials: a seat on a double-decker bus equipped with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and restrooms. By minimizing overhead costs and optimizing route efficiency, Megabus was able to keep prices low while maintaining a reliable service.

The Megabus brand became so popular that it forced other competitors like Greyhound to spin off brands to compete but in the end, it couldn't stay afloat with the rise in diesel prices and lower ridership.
