Barack Obama to Announce Expansive Plan for Gun Control [POLL]

President Barack Obama is set to announce the most widespread gun control agenda in decades today (Jan. 15), calling on Congress to force all weapons buyers to undergo background checks and prohibit assault weapons.

According to The Washington Post, Obama is also expected to propose school safety initiatives, including funding for more police officers in schools, as well as more funding for mental health care.

This will be the largest form of gun control regulations proposed by a president since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.

Undoubtedly the largest hurdle of Obama's proposals will be the ban on assault weapons, which will be faced with major opposition from the likes of the National Rifle Association, as well as other politicians -- Republicans and Democrats -- on Capitol Hill.

“An assault-weapons stand-alone ban on just guns alone, in the political reality we have, will not go anywhere,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Sunday on CNN.

The president will ask Congress for a renewed prohibition on assault weapons sales that expired in 2004, a measure to ban high-capacity ammunition clips and the closing of loopholes in the background check system, according to the Associated Press.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will make the announcement at a White House event attended by children from around the country who wrote letters to the president about gun violence and school safety.
