Tony Romo. The quarterback who couldn’t lead the most talked about sports franchise, Dallas Cowboys, to a championship. That’s the way most people will remember him. I get it.

But he was still a great player and the honors that have been shown him are deserved. Tuesday night, April 11, the Dallas Mavericks will do their part by making Tony Romo a “Maverick For A Day” according to ESPN.

Mark Cuban did say a couple weeks ago he was looking for a “pass first point guard.” Here he is.

Tony will be in uniform, participate in the lay up line before the game and sit on the team bench. It is reported that he won’t play in the game, though.

Come on! The Mavericks are out of the playoffs, it’s the final game of the season, put him in during the last minute of the game. That would be great. I can already hear the “Let Tony play!” chants from the fans.

Longtime Cowboys hater, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, had this to say on Monday’s First Take.

I always get a kick out of Stephen A. when he talks about the Cowboys.

Caron Butler, who played for the Mavericks and played against Romo in high school, said he could have played in the NBA.

He told ESPN, “Believe it or not, man, when we were in the prime of our careers, I used to always talk about it: could have easily been a professional basketball player. And a lot of people were like, ‘Man, you’re crazy for saying that,’ but Tony could shoot. He could handle the ball. He had a knack for scoring, man, he really did.”

Tony will take the place of Phil Simms on the number one analyst team with Jim Nance for CBS’ NFL coverage starting this upcoming season.¬†The 2017 schedule has not been released yet, but I’m sure CBS will get at least one Cowboys game. I’m interested to see how Tony will call that game, if they get one.

Tony leaves the Cowboys as the all time leader in pass yards (34,183) and touchdowns (248). Yes, greater than Troy Aikman or Roger Stabauch, two of the best players to have worn the star on their helmet.

I’ve written a few times about my opinion on the whole situation Tony faced in Dallas. The quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is The Most critiqued position in all of sports. But it was never all Tony’s fault. The Cowboys never had all the pieces around him to have a successful team. *cough* *cough* Defense¬†*cough*

To me, Tony will always be remembered as a great Dallas Cowboys quarterback. As a lifelong fan, I wished he could have brought a championship, but it is a team game. And the Cowboys have never had the team to do it since their last championship in 1996.

Thank you Tony Romo for your time with the Cowboys. Thank you for being the professional you were with the transition to Dak Prescott. Football fans outside of Dallas will never understand the player that you were.
