What’s more relevant right now than tech thriller about privacy and the dangers of the digital age? After the latest season of Black Mirror continued to explore the tech terrors of the not-so-distant future, James Ponsoldt’s latest film is all about how much a social media platform called The Circle can help humanity and potentially harm it.

So what is The Circle? Emma Watson’s Mae Holland describes it as “the chaos of the world made elegant.” Tom Hanks, who plays the founder of the titular tech and social media company, says it can cure cancer and solve world hunger. Hey, this Circle thing sounds pretty awesome! But not all tech is good tech, and as the first trailer for The Circle continues, Watson’s employee becomes even more paranoid and concerned. Here’s the full synopsis, via The Playlist:

Hanks plays the founder of the world’s largest tech and social media company. He encourages Watson’s character, who’s rising through the company ranks, to live her life with complete transparency — but no one is really safe when everyone is watching. The novel turns into a contemporary thriller about the perils of life in a digital age where personal data is collected, sifted and monetized and used for surveillance, rendering privacy obsolete.

The trailer is pretty intriguing, especially for anyone who’s a fan of Black Mirror or the twisted sci-fi of Westworld. It’s adapted from the novel of the same name by Dave Eggars, the same guy who wrote Hologram for the King, which Hanks recently starred in. The Circle also stars John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswald, Bill Paxon, and Boyhood‘s Ellar Coltrane. The film hits theaters April 28, 2017.
