In terms of US dollars, Sushil Kumar has just become the first real-life ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

On Tuesday, Kumar won 50 million rupes — or just over $1 million — by answering every question right on the Indian version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire.’ It was the largest cash award in Indian game show history.

Kumar, who makes $120 a month as a government worker in one of India’s most impoverished regions, had been too poor to afford a TV. He had previously watched ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ at his neighbor’s house, and because Kumar would always get the questions right, his neighbor had encouraged him to try out for the game show.

The 26-year-old plans to use some of the money to pay for a course to help him prepare for India’s difficult civil service exam. He will also buy his wife a house, help his parents pay off their debts, give his brothers money to use for start up businesses and build a library for the children of his village. Don’t forget to save some for a rainy day, Kumar!
