The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services are sponsoring the 4th Annual Kids Fest 2011, on April 2, 2011 from 10:00am till 2:00pm at The Broadway Square Mall in Tyler.  There will be special appearances by the John Tyler High School Choir and McGruff, the crime dog. 

 This is a family event to promote awareness on how to keep children safe, promote well-being, and how to get involved in your community. This is a collaborative event with participants from law enforcement, schools, medical community and different community organizations. The Kid Fest event will focus on Health/Safety, Recreation and Educational programs for children that are offered in the community.  The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services’ goal is to bring awareness to safe and fun programs available to the children and their families.  Our hope is by educating the community we can reduce the reports of abuse and neglect and keep our children safe.

During the fiscal year of September 1, 2009 thru August 31, 2010, there were 371 children under the conservatorship of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in Smith County alone. Smith County received 1,063 intakes alleging abuse/neglect  and there were 363 confirmed victims in Smith County.
