Did Glee Cross The Line Tuesday Night?

Common Sense Media

It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest shows on TV right now, but did Glee‘s content cross the line last night?  The episode was called “The First Time” and some are saying that Fox along with the shows creator went too far.

The episode dealt with 2 different types of relationships between 2 teen couples losing their viginity, one heterosexual and one homosexual.  The characters Finn and Rachel consummated their relationships as did Kurt and Blaine.  The show is drawing fire from the Parents Television Council and has support from Entertainment Weekly’s Pop Watch.

Melissa Henson from the Parents Television Council called the show “reprehensible” and said Fox was reckless in monitoring the shows content for celebrating teen sex.  She says the shows creator, Ryan Murphy, devised a story for shock purposes, not educatinal ones.  The President of the Parents Television Council, Tim Winter, says

The fact that ‘Glee’ intends to not only broadcast, but celebrate children having sex is reprehensible. The gender of the high school characters involved is irrelevant. Teen sex is now more prevalent on TV than adult sex and ‘Glee’ is only playing into that trend.”

However, Tim Stack of Entertainment Weekly doesn’t see the show or the episode like that.  Tim said the relationships and how they were depicted on the show were

handled very delicately and is incredibly moving. I can’t think of another network series that’s taken a teenage gay relationship so far or been so progressive.”

The site Common Sense Media has a few options and suggestions to help parents talk about sex and virginity that are being brought up in teen dramas and how to address them with your child/children.

So, what do you think, did Glee go to far or are they right on track?
